On Saturday, when the sun was warm with the first true feeling of spring, I had a million things to do and so did Jason. But instead we sat in the grass with the pig. The chickens wandered over. Then one kid joined us. And then the other. They’re teenagers now, and it’s easy to let moments like this slip past.

Before I knew it, we had been sitting there until the sun went down, our whole family together. The pig, the chickens, the dogs, and even the cats joining us one by one.

We all watched the horses, who would have joined us if we’d opened the gate.

I keep thinking about that.
